Why Bang Good BBQ has the best BBQ, Brisket, and St. Louis style ribs in the City

A good barbecue is more than the sum of its parts.

Real good barbecue is the result of magic that occurs between heat, meat, spice, and smoke.

Cooking up a batch of good barbecue is an art form.

Here at SHARPSHOOTERS PIT AND GRILL, we pride ourselves in our world-class barbecue ribs, brisket, and smoked meats.

No Place Like St Louis

The United States is a large country with a diverse culinary landscape, especially when it comes to barbecue. From the Carolinas to Texas, from Memphis to Alabama, meats are smoked and grilled with a passion that nears religious fervor.

But if there is a place that serves unquestionably good barbecue, it is Missouri. Missourians have been perfecting the technique of slow-cooking and smoking good cuts of meat for ages, and the results are more than evident.

St. Louis in particular is the Mecca of good barbecue. Thousands of local grills compete for the title of the best barbecue in town, and do so in hundreds of world-class culinary competitions every year. And while each place prepares its own specialties and secret sauces, some spots rise above the rest.

SHARPSHOOTERS PIT AND GRILL, located inside the all-new, state of the art St. Louis SharpShooter gun range is one of these places. But why does this spot have such a bang-good barbecue?

The answer is simple: Flavor!

The folk at Sharpshooters Pit And Grill are up to something mighty because the amount of flavor they are able to achieve is nothing to scoff at. Open daily, these folk are delivering mouth-watering, tender, delicious meats with a flavor profile that is the envy of the competition. Their sweet, tangy, sticky bbq sauce is hands-down the best in town.

Also, these guys know how to smoke! Smoking meats is hard; in fact, most people go about it the wrong way and end up with bitter, burnt-tasting food. At Sharpshooters Pit and Grill, smoking is done using tried and true methods built on decades of experience.

If you don’t believe the hype, I understand. Everyone and their mother boasts about having the best barbecue. Thing is, you don’t have to take my word for it. Swing on by SharpShooters today, and give their on-site daily-smoked brisket and turkey a try. Order a batch of tender, fall-of-the-bones sticky ribs, or a pulled-pork sandwich and find out for yourself why this is the best barbecue in St. Louis.

The restaurant industry was one of the first victims of the Coronavirus shutdowns. However, in the midst of the crisis, you can still find interesting, tasty, and attractive gastronomic proposals if you know where to look.

Fortunately, we know where to look.

Let’s talk about SharpShooter Pit and Grill, the best BBQ restaurant in St. Louis.

Bang Good Barbecue!

Sharpshooters Pit and Grill is a top-of-the-line barbeque restaurant located inside of the all-new, state of the art St. Louis SharpShooter shooting range, the area’s premier training academy and education institution in all firearms-related training.

This newest and largest world-class indoor shooting range has a lot of things going for it, but I can honestly say, with a shred of doubt, that the main draw of Sharpshooters is the on-site smoked brisket and turkey offerings.

Smoked daily, with a new batch cooked to perfection every single day. Sharpshooters Pit and Grill closes when they run out of food. And with food as tasty as theirs, and prices as friendly as theirs, some days they sell out fast!

Their baby-back rib platters are super generous and super tasty. Ribs are cooked to fall-off-the-bone perfection and smothered in a deliciously tangy sauce that is made with just the right amount of spice. This is home-made quality, Sunday BBQ dinner style goodness.

The Pit and Grill also offers a fantastic array of smoked sandwiches. Served on a buttery soft bun, with a side of your choice of baked beans, potato salad, coleslaw, green beans, or applesauce, these sandwiches are oh-so-good delicious.

Whether you go for the classic slow-cooked pulled pork, the smoked tender brisket, or smoked turkey, you’ll be rewarded with an honest to goodness best in category sandwich.

There is also a smoked BLT on the menu, which I’ve yet to try, but can predict will be delicious as well.

For those looking for a leaner option, there are two salad choices and they are both equally delicious. There is the standard fresh green salad, and my favorite, the smoked meat salad which includes fresh lettuce, tomato, and the choice of your favorite smoked meat.

I almost forgot to mention the wings and nachos. Any self-respecting BBQ restaurant will have specialty wings and nacho to round out the menu, and the Sharpshooters Pit and Grill do not disappoint in this regard.

I thank goodness every day that Sharpshooters are still operating during the COVID-19 outbreak, albeit with limited hours. Also important to mention that, like most restaurants open at this time, they are also limited to curbside or carry-out service only. For more information or to place an order, please call them at 314-353-4745.

What Makes Sharpshooter’s Pit and Grill’s Food So Great?

If you love BBQ, tender meat, and the smokey flavors of St. Louis then Sharpshooter’s Pit and Grill needs to be on your radar!

Located inside the world’s newest largest indoor shooting range, Sharpshooter's succulent menu is world-class. They serve delicious BBQ, pulled pork, and smoked brisket and turkey plates are some of the best in the country.

But what makes Sharpshooter’s BBQ so special? After all, there are hundreds of BBQ style restaurants and smokehouses in St. Louis, not to mention the state of Missouri at large. What is it that makes Sharpshooter’s Pit and Grill stand out from the competition?

Meat-Centric Menu

The folks at St. Louis’ Sharpshooter’s Pit and Grill know one thing and do one thing, but they do it oh so well!

There’s a growing trend in the BBQ business to think outside the box and to come up with fancy dishes and whatnot. But BBQ isn’t meant to be fancy; BBQ is meant to be good, and good BBQ starts with good meat.

The menu at Sharpshooter’s Pit and Grill was built with single-minded focus. Quality cuts of quality meat prepared using pure ingredients and traditional methods.

Slow-cooked Pork shoulder

Tender Beef brisket smoked daily

Juicy smoked Turkey

Fall-of-the-bones Pork ribs

Their delicious sandwiches are prepared with the same single-minded focus of using simple, traditional, and flavorful ingredients.

There are sides to be had, but these are expected, nay, required. How can you have St. Louis style BBQ without baked beans, green beans, potato salad, or slaw?

Flavor

When it comes to St. Louis BBQ, flavor is king.

Sharpshooter’s Pit and Grill BBQ tastes good. This is an objective and unequivocal fact!

Your BBQ might be tender, but if it doesn't pack a flavor punch, then your BBQ is lacking. Period. Full stop.

How do the culinary geniuses of the Sharpshooter’s kitchen prepare such fantastic, great-tasting food?

They do two things right in my book:

First of all, they serve fresh, cooked-daily food until it runs out. These guys cook smart, so when you hit up Sharpshooter’s Pit and Grill from some mouth-watering BBQ after a day of shooting, you can rest assured that there won’t be any reheated food on your plate.

Second, they know how to smoke. If you have never smoked a cut of meat in your life you might not know how darned difficult it is to do it properly. A million things can go wrong when you smoke meat, and all of them can leave you with a bunch of bitter, foul-tasting food.

Sharpshooter’s Pit and Grill serves some of the tastiest smoked cuts in the country because they understand the complexities of the process. They burn the right wood, with the right amount of moisture and the right amount of oxygen to guarantee the creation of that tasty bark we all love and expect.

Bang Good BBQ

If you are ever in the St. Loius area and you like BBQ, then you owe yourself the opportunity to try the menu at Sharpshooter’s Pit and Grill.

You will do as I did: I came for the guns, but I stayed for the food!

Business owner Keith Brooks' family pawn shop, Southside Jewelry and Loan, holds a senior spot in south county along a stretch of Gravois Road. For 21 years, the combination jewelry, gun and goods shop has occupied a sizable storefront in Affton. To expand his multipurpose empire, Brooks purchased the adjacent property -- a former coin car wash. In August 2013 Sharpshooter Pit and Grill (8135 Gravois Road; 314-353-4745) opened to the public featuring a barbecue restaurant connected to the region's largest indoor shooting range.

At Sharpshooter, Brooks aims to offer a sporting experience loaded with creature comforts. Patrons can chow on daily smoked meats in the restaurant while checking out closed-circuit television of shooters taking target practice next door. The range itself features twenty lanes, a state-of-the-art air-filtration system, and classrooms offering training courses for both hobbyists and security professionals.

  • "Bang good BBQ."

Mark Laplant, formerly of Lumiere Place, manages the restaurant where meats get smoked daily and are offered until they sell out. Choose from smoked wings, nachos and salads topped with your choice of meat, sandwiches, and plates -- pulled pork, beef brisket, smoked turkey and ribs. Sides include standard baked beans, coleslaw, potato salad, green beans, applesauce and fries, and the menu also features malts, shakes and sundaes for dessert.

"We've been flattered with the support of Affton and people in the neighboring communities. It's a wonderful situation," says Brooks. "We've gotten a lot of national attention through shooting-sports foundations about bringing a new face to sports shooting -- making it more of a destination point rather than an old boys' network."

Sharpshooter offers day passes for its lanes as well as restaurant coupons for range customers. Sharpshooter Pit and Grill's current hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. For the full menu, prices and more information, visit the Sharpshooter Pit and Grill website or follow it on Facebook.

If you love ribs, it's time to stop into Sharpshooter Pit and Grill at 8135 Gravois here in St. Louis.  The best deal in the city on the best ribs you can get is live, and we don't want ANYONE to miss out!  Come in today to get a half-slab of ribs, 2 Sides, and a drink for only $12.99!

IMG 0100 CopyWe get a LOT of questions about how we slow smoke our ribs to get that tenderness and smoky flavor in every bite, and pushed throughout the ribs.  While we can't give away any of our recipes for our rubs (that's a tightly guarded secret!) what we can give you is a snapshot of the process we use to make the best BBQ ribs in the city.

Our pitmaster arrives on site at 6 in the evening to begin preperation for the next day's meals.  As with the brisket and pulled pork, he uses the size and thickness of the meat to determine exactly how long the ribs need to be smoked - it's generally three and a half to four hours in the smoker to get that exact flavor that we know you crave.  The ribs are prepared early, going into the smoker at 6 a.m. and seasoned with our rub so that they can be smoked at the exact right time to ensure maximum flavor.

Sharpshooters Pit and Grill's barbeque restaurant located inside of the all-new, state of the art StL SharpShooter - the newest and largest world class indoor shooting range in St. Louis MO, is open for business and serving up delicious BBQ daily.  The main draw of Sharpshooters is the on-site smoked brisket and turkey, smoked daily.  Every day is a new batch.  Finding your favorite dish may take a few trips, so make sure to try everything.  Check in daily for the specials, there's always something going on.   While You're Shootin', We're Cookin'!

Sharpshooter Pit and Grill St Louis is the area's best barbeque restaurant, but how did it get that way?  It's simple - they put in the time.  They take each item on their menu and create a unique taste that keeps people coming back.  Take the pulled pork, for example. The Pitmaster comes in at 5:30 in the afternoon to start the rubs and smoking process.  From there, the pork butt is placed in the smoker for its 14-16 hour cooking time, giving it a long, slow cooked flavor and tenderness that many smokehouses don't take the time to achieve.  The butt is then judged at 5:30 a.m. by the pitmaster, who carefully monitors the last fe hours of the smoking cycle.

We get a LOT of questions about how we slow smoke our ribs to get that tenderness and smoky flavor in every bite, and pushed throughout the ribs.  While we can't give away any of our recipes for our rubs (that's a tightly guarded secret!) what we can give you is a snapshot of the process we use to make the best BBQ ribs in the city.

IMG 0010 CopyOur pitmaster arrives on site at 6 in the evening to begin preperation for the next day's meals.

Missouri barbecue is a thing of beauty.  Sure, I’m from Missouri and perhaps a little biased, but my home state doesn’t always get the credit it deserves on the smoked meat front.  When Missouri barbecue is mentioned, most people think of places like Memphis.  Well, right here in St. Louis, Missouri at Sharpshooter Pit and Grill we serve championship BBQ every day.

Pork is King

By and large, pork is the one true king at Sharpshooter Pit and Grill.  The cuts of meat may differ by venue, but there’s one thing we can agree on: Pork makes the best barbecue.  Pork shoulder is perhaps the most common now.  Our Pit and Grill pork shoulder is slow-cooked, up to 14 hours smothered in our secret rub.  After a cooling period, our chefs shred the pork meat to prepare our award winning sandwiches for our loyal customers.

Sharpshooter barbecue is what many aficionados would call true blue barbecue.  None of that slap it on a hot grill with a thick layer of sauce stuff – this barbecue is a whole-day love affair.

This means the meat is cooked low and slow, the fat slowly liquefying while basting the meat, and smoke flavor gradually permeating the outer layer, thus creating the “Smoke Ring”.  It’s a labor of love and pit masters tend to their BBQ with care.  Undercook the pork and it will be chewy.  Overcook it and the meat becomes stringy.  The magic is in-between – juicy and flavorful, and easily falling off the bone.

A quintessential element of Sharpshooters Championship BBQ is is the perfect amount of wood smoking.  Our woods of choice are apple and cherry, which deliver a milder, sweeter flavor than other wood.  No matter how it’s done, the basic requirement is smoldering wood kicking up fragrant smoke and infusing the meat in the process.  It will form a reddish ring near the exterior of the meat, which, again, creates the “Smoke Ring”.  It gives the slow-cooked meat a smoky flavor, complementing the flavor of the meat without overpowering it.

Come by Sharpshooter Pit and Grill for the award-winning BBQ that is slow-smoked to “PERFECTION”.

We get a LOT of people asking us about the processes for our barbecue here at Sharpshooter Pit and Grill.  People that come in for our brisket, ribs, pulled pork and chicken, baked beans, or any of our delicious foods want to know how we get the meat so tender and juicy.  Well, it's not an easy process!

St Louis BBQ BrisketOur Pitmaster starts smoking the next day's meats at 5:30 P.M. or so, using our special, secret house made rub to create the unique flavor that our customers have come to expect.  What's in the rub?  I'm sorry, but it's a trade secret.  If we told you, well, we are on top of a gun range...  However, our slow-smoked brisket gets its rubdown to ensure deliciousness and goes into the oven at approximately 5:30, and starts the process of smoking.

The pitmaster returns at 5:30 the next morning, and starts the rigorous testing to make sure that the brisket is up to our standards.  He checks color, temperature, and texture to see how much longer the brisket will need. Brisket is smoked at Sharpshooter from 12-14 hours, depending on a few factors, including the size of the cut and how much other meat is also being smoked.  The meat is then expertly carved and served as sandwiches or straight on the plate, with any of our delicious sides.

BBQ Ribs St Louis

Barbecue is HOT!  It’s on TV constantly, BBQ festivals are sprouting up all over Missouri like wild flowers and people are lining up for a taste of America’s only continuous indigenous cuisine.  But as popular as it is to talk about and watch on TV, the best part is eating it!

BBQ Associations all over the Midwest have been collecting reviews on their local BBQ joints for years.  These reviews are being submitted by judges with a true love for what is known as traditional American BBQ.

Right here in St. Louis at Sharpshooter’s Pit and Grill located at 8101 Gravois we have been serving up award-winning BBQ for years.  We recommend anyone who loves barbecue to come early and come often because we smoke fresh daily and close when we sell out.

All taste is subjective.  While hundreds of reviews can help collectively guide you in your quest for the perfect plate of ‘que, you will have to make the ultimate decision for yourself.

If you like ABC barbecue and you don’t like XYZ, then you should obviously eat at ABC often and stay out of XYZ, regardless of what any judge or reviewer might say.

We’re confident that after all is said and done you will agree with the thousands of happy customers that have judged the BBQ at Sharpshooter’s Pit and Grill in St. Louis at 8101 Gravois to be award-winning delicious.

Our menu is fresh daily including the smoked baked beans we can’t keep in stock.  Each piece of meat is pampered and smoked to perfection by our long-time Pitmaster, Joe D.

Everything fresh, every day, cared for over 12-14 hours like a new mother caring for her baby.  If you think Smoked Meat and BBQ, think Sharpshooter’s Pit and Grill!
